Week 4 term 3

In light of the upcoming pre-test any students preparing for grading can accompany the instructor specialisations for this week to start preparing for grading (eg see instructor specialization). If you are not grading please see the specialization outline below:

Poomsae

  • Prepare for state competitions by practicing the relevant forms

  • Record the two patterns you need for competition to be shown to an instructor if one cannot judge you during class

  • If you already have received feedback you can also work on implementing that

Sparring

  • In preparation for Red Dragon Taekwondo tournament review the new rules with referees and use youtube to watch at least one match from the world championships

  • Try to analyse what worked well and what didn’t during the fight

  • Then start practicing a progression combo (eg think of an attack repeat it but then at the last second change the technique or add something to catch your opponent off guard)

    • Repeat that whole process but think about what defences an opponent could use and how to then over come those by progressing a second time.

    • Start simple and try and get more complex over time

Self-defenses

  • Using it for inspiration try and storyboard an idea for what you could do to string a series of 4 self defenses together with a partner

    • If you don't have a partner to work with try and come up with a sequence of one step techniques instead

Referee

  • Help review the new rules with sparring members

  • Watch some of the world championship matches maybe starting with Lior Cohens and try to identify what penalties were given, what was missed and why certain hand signals where used

    • Try and predict results of Video Review before the result is given

Instructor

  • Take all students preparing for black belt and go through forms

  • If you get through that help them with Blackbelt kicks both paddle and bag kicks

Coach

  • Watch some matches from the world championships with the referees and try to identify the strategies and feedback you would provide to athletes during the break or if you had  a fighter who would have to fight the matches winner

Weapons

  • For this week the main focus will be on learning the weapons patterns. First dans can start practicing the first Dan form while 2nd dans can start the new forms for both sword and staff

  • If you complete your form or know it already record yourself to receive feedback from a more senior student

  • For anyone looking for a challenge review the following videos and try your best to replicate it:

Board breaking

  • Start with a quick stretch focusing on the muscle groups used for your breaks

  • Run through your planned board breaking sequence

  • Review the sequence and see if there is another new technique you can add or increase the difficulty of

    • Start practicing the new technique or complication focusing on technique
